i’m reading this book right now. it’s the most intimidating book i’ve ever set out to read.
you can’t tell from this screen-shot, but it’s a mammoth boulder of book, with way too many words crammed on each page.
i’ve owned it since 2001. but it’s been sitting in my old bedroom in my parents’ house till 2 months ago. because it scared me. my buddy zack was supposed to also read infinite jest this summer. that was what inspired me to bring it to brooklyn. but, as it turns out, he has to, like, read lots of books for his job, so he doesn’t have time to read this frighteningly large 1000+ page colossus. i respect that.
as it turns out, i’m not utterly alone in my pursuit, as there’s an entire website, infinitesummer.org, that is reading the book this summer. and setting deadlines. and posting blog entries about it. very helpful motivation. though i’m pretty behind on their reading deadlines, i’ve made it through almost 300 pages. i’m so pathetically proud of myself.
more thoughts on the book itself soon.
